The Silent Emotions: Awakening ParentHood- Rommal Surana

As a special needs educator, I work with many unique and wonderful children. Among them are twins, Manas and Mannan, both on the autism spectrum. Communication is one of the biggest challenges with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and it can be difficult for children to express their thoughts, feelings, or needs—especially when parents and teachers don't fully understand what they are trying to convey. Manas is verbal, while Mannan is nonverbal, but both express themselves in ways beyond words.

One day, during class, Mannan was unusually sleepy and seemed uninterested. I didn’t force him to participate and kept our activity short. Later, when it was Manas’ turn for class, Mannan grew visibly upset. Without words, he picked up his brother's school bag and gestured for Manas to leave the desk, showing that he wasn’t finished with his lesson. His frustration and emotions were clear, even though he didn’t speak a word. He was angry with me too, for not giving him the same time and attention as his brother.

I hugged Mannan and reassured him that we would do more activities together in the next class. Though still reluctant, he left the classroom. That moment made me realize how deep their emotions run, even when they can't express them verbally. These children feel the same emotions—pain, frustration, or being left out—just like anyone else. Their reactions might come out unconventionally, but they always communicate something important.

Parenting Tip:

👍Children with special needs often express emotions differently.

👍Try to understand the feelings behind their actions instead of focusing solely on their behavior.

👍Compassion and patience can help foster an inclusive environment where every child feels heard.
